The Butthole Surfersare an American psychedelicand punkband. The band was founded by Gibby Haynesand Paul Learyin San Antonio, Texasin 1982. Incorporating elements of hardcore, psychedelia, and performance art, their live shows also made heavy use of strobe lights, background films (of note, footage of penis reconstruction surgery) and naked dancers, the Butthole Surfers' live performances adding a dimension that completely side-stepped the arena rockgrandiosity and secured them a prominent place in the cultannals. Although their core fans came from a generation who's motivation had been sapped by television, Alaskan pot and ritalin, the Butthole Surfers unintentionally built up a tour following mimicking (or parodying?) the Grateful Dead. Acidheads displayed tickets from past Surfers' shows like so many Yu-Gi-Oh cards in the late 1990s.
